HAVE A DRINK, STAY A WHILE

The second collaboration between Jennifer Lehr and gallerist Kirk Nelson of La Loma Projects— the longtime friends

have set out to give art and design enthusiasts a taste of what it’s like to live with the joy and vitality of Kaplan’s work. Visitors are welcomed as guests and encouraged to take in the show at their leisure—to lounge in the living spaces and garden—while enjoying cocktails on Saturday evenings or scones and coffee Sunday afternoons.

“Too often,” explains Lehr, “people don’t spend as much time seeing a show as they might likebecause the ubiquitous white cube gallery isn’t the most comfortable and inviting of spaces.”

"I DON'T REALLY PAINT FLOWERS."  — Stan Kaplan

Visitors will likely be shocked to learn that Kaplan doesn’t think of himself as painting flowers.Rather, he leverages the universal appeal of the floral arrangement and uses it as a vehicle for what is essentially an abstract enterprise. While the recognizable motif offers a familiar entrypoint, it’s Kaplan’s well-honed, nonchalant approach to painting—full of bold colors, masterfulinterplays between opacity and transparency, and raw, assertive brush work — that enables thepaintings to transcend traditional notions associated with floral still lifes. The results aremesmerizing—each painting radiating its own tone, mood, and affect that continue to deepen andsurprise with time. When viewed in concert, these paintings span the divide betweenheartbreaking and hopeful.

AN ELECTRIC CHEMISTRY BETWEEN ART AND DECOR

Inspired by Kaplan’s paintings, Lehr has created a transportive setting specifically for the exhibition using selections from The Oxford House Collection. Like Kaplan, Lehr has a penchant for vibrant color which she combines with her passion for mixing periods, patterns and styles from around the globe. The Collection can be viewed on the Chez Lehr section under the Shop Menu. Featured treasures include an Art Nouveau Jacob & Joseph Kohn Bentwood Bench; Marge Carson Elephant SideTables; a Majolica Camel Garden Stool and exquisite textiles from Uzbekistan, Pakistan, India, Egypt, Nairobi, Iran and Turkey. And, unlike most showcase homes, both the art and decor are available for purchase.
